Cuban Medical teams are working throughout Sub Sahara Africa to meet what is expected to be the greatest human toll of the Pandemic.
African nations with fragile Medical Health care systems are bracing for a sustained battle against Covid-19. They faced a similar challenge with the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the Congo.
Cuban Medical teams have been at the forefront in Africa during the wars for independence and the South African straggle against apartheid. Nelson Mandela said “Cubans has been at the forefront in the liberation of Africa” Mandela first international visit after his release from Robin Island was to Cuba. In a public address in Havana Mandela thanked the Cuban People for giving their lives to support Africa’s Liberation.
Cuban doctors are now in 22 African countries, including South Africa assisting in the war against Covid-19. Cuban Medical teams have been meeting health challenges in African nations since 1970.
A team of 200 Cuban medics arrived in the South African nation on Sunday April 27, 2020. They include family physicians, epidemiologists, biotechnology experts and
health-care technology engineers They are to be deployed to different provinces by South Afnca’s Department of Health, according to Cuba’s ambassador Rodolfo Benitez Verson.
The US secretary of State Mr Pompeo has criticized Cuban Aid to Africa as opportunistic during the Pandemic.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel reacted to Mr Pompeo comments by tweeting “The United States lie deliberately when they attack Cuba’s international medical cooperation with lies and slanders”
The arrival of Cuban medics in South Africa received an overwhelming welcome from grassroots organizers in hardest hit poor crowded townships like those in poor Urban American cities.
South Africa has recorded 5,350 cases of Coronavirus, including 103 deaths, where the hardest hit are the poor who welcomed Cuban Aid with open arms, said an ANC filed representative.
